What is net metering and how does it work in Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia Power's Self-Generating Option lets residential solar systems export surplus electricity to the grid and earn credits at the current retail rate (~$0.18/kWh). Credits bank throughout the year and offset your usage — but unused credits expire annually on January 1 and are not purchased by NSP. Your monthly base charge ($19.17) cannot be offset by solar. We size systems to match your actual consumption so credits are not wasted.

Does solar work in Nova Scotia winters?

Yes — cold temperatures actually help. Panels are more efficient in cool weather; on a clear winter day at −10°C, a Nova Scotia array can produce 15–20% above its rated nameplate output. Annual production losses from snow coverage are typically around 3%. Winter days are short, but spring (March–May) is typically the strongest production quarter due to cool temperatures, lengthening days, and snow-reflected light.

Are there solar rebates or incentives available in Nova Scotia in 2026?

The main residential rebate programs have closed. The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan both ended in 2025. Nova Scotia's SolarHomes rebate (Efficiency Nova Scotia) ended April 2025. There is no active provincial residential solar rebate as of March 2026. Some municipalities offer low-interest property-linked financing (PACE) — including Halifax, Bridgewater, Lunenburg, and others.
